    This month, APA’s National Planning Conference visitsHayes Valley with SF Planning, David Baker Architects and Envelope’s Douglas Burnham. This

    examines one of San Francisco's most successful urban renewals. When the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the freeway cutting through Hayes Valley, the community saw its chance to replace the elevated structure with much-needed housing. Guided by the Market-Octavia Plan, this transformation incorporates active uses, diverse housing, engaging streetscapes, and urban experimentation—including PROXY.
