It is hard to believe that with this Fall’s Festival, we are entering our 10th year of screening free films at PROXY! In that first year in 2015, our festival was a scrappy experiment in activating public space: projecting films from the back of a box-truck onto the outdoor movie screen we had crowdfunded for just a few months prior. Under the tagline of LET’S WATCH MOVIES OUTSIDE TOGETHER, we began our now decade-long effort to encourage togetherness through shared experiences.

Through each of our Fall and Spring Festivals, we work to curate a range of contemporary independent films that we think San Franciscans (and the wider Bay Area) will enjoy, and seek to lift up voices and share stories that would otherwise be missed by many. Every screening is free and open to all, with the expressed intention to lower the barrier to access important and meaningful films.

As architects, designers and artists, our mostly-volunteer team seeks to create engaged, high-quality experiences for those who come out — with playfully designed posters for each festival, newsletters for each movie with additional content about the directors and ideas of each film, custom pre-show playlists curated for each film, and a uniquely-designed pre-show slideshow for each festival that emerges on the screen as the day turns to dusk and then to night — all to set the scene for a lovely evening of watching film together under the stars.

The festival runs on Fridays and one Saturday, from September 26th through October 25th. These FREE evening films begin 7:30 PM (with Wicked beginning 6:45 PM on Oct 25th).
